Course Description: 

This course examines the life and works of Jalal al-Din Rumi, with an emphasis on his religious orientation; exploring the gray area in which Rumi’s poetry and works occupies on the religious landscape. This course analyzes the source and inspiration of Rumi’s works and his intended audience.

Required Reading:

-The Sufi Path of Love: The Spiritual Teachings of Rumi by William C. Chittick.
-Rumi and Islam: Selections from His Stories, Poems, and Discourses—Annotated and & Explained by Ibrahim Gamard

Suggested Reading: 

Rumi’s Mystical Design: Reading the Mathnawi, Book One by Seyed Ghahreman Safavi.
Feeling the Shoulder of the Lion: Poetry and Teaching Stories of Rumi by Coleman Barks.
Mathnawi of Jalaluddin Rumi (3 volume set) by Reynold A. Nicholson.
The Quatrains of Rumi by Ibrahim Gamard

Instructor: Nabil Ali

Nabil Ali holds a B.A. from George Washington University in International Affairs with a concentration in the Middle East. He also recently finished his M.A. in Islamic studies from the University of Georgia. His thesis was an analysis of the semantic field of love in the Qur'an, Hadith, and in the writings of al-Hallaj, Rumi, and Miyan Muhammad Bakhsh.
