IIIT and Hartford Seminary sign MOU

The Graduate Certificate for Imams and Community Leadership, and academic collaboration in general between IIIT and Hartford Seminary, moved a significant step forward with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on October 3. The Memorandum formalized earlier agreements which defined and regulated the offering of courses in the pilot graduate certificate program.
The Memorandum was signed by IIIT vice president Dr. Jamal Barzinji and Hartford Seminary president Dr. Heidi Hadsell. Present at the meeting and the signing ceremony were Hartford Seminary’s academic dean Dr. James Nieman, and director of The Fairfax Institute Dr. Iqbal Unus. IIIT’s director of finance Dr. Hisham Altalib and director of research Dr. Abubaker Al-Shingieti also attended the meeting, which was also joined by Sterling Management president Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza.
Dr. Jamal Barzinji expressed his admiration for IIIT’s partnership with Hartford Seminary in this unique program. He expressed his hope that IIIT will be the seminary’s off-site campus not only for this program but also for expanded instructional activities in the future. Dr.Iqbal Unus, who heads the program run by The Fairfax Institute at IIIT, stated that the program sought to enhance the ability of Muslim imams to better lead and serve their communities within the American social context. He opined that Hartford Seminary did indeed offer the right set of courses and a unique group of scholars to teach them.
The Seminary has put out a press release to share news and background information about the signing event which can be read here.
